You have found your dream place and you can’t wait to move! However, the mere thought of packing and moving can dampen all the excitement.
Sure, you can’t do much about the process of moving. However, there are some things you can do to reduce the stress and make the move smoother and hassle-free.
Here are eight handy tips for a hassle-free move.
Donate Items You Don’t Need
Moving is a good opportunity to declutter and give away items you don’t need to charity.
Give away all the items you haven’t used for several months. This way, you’ll reduce your load and have fewer things to take care of, on the day of the move.
Begin to de-clutter at least two weeks before the move.
Make a List
Once you have decluttered, make a list of things you want to move to the new place.
With a list in hand, you’ll have a clear idea of the number of things you want to move.
This information will come handy when talking to moving companies as well as choosing one that fits within your budget.
Plan Your Packing
Pack all the essentials such as medicines, toiletries and extra pairs of clothes in an overnight bag so you have them ready as soon as you move in.
Use a separate, preferably transparent box, for things you will need right after you move in. Include phone chargers, box cutters, paper towels, trash bags and toilet papers in this box.
Use your clothes to wrap glassware and other delicate items. You can also use well-washed socks to wrap glasses. This not only provides additional protection but also helps save time and money spent packing your clothes and other items simultaneously.
You can save on packing boxes by using laundry bins, beer boxes, baskets and suitcases. Stuff each with your belongings; wheeled suitcases and beer boxes with handles are great for carrying heavy items such as books.
Label Your Boxes on the Sides
Labelling your boxes will help you arrange them easily at the new place.
Be sure to place the label on the sides. This way, you can identify the boxes even if they are stacked. Mark each box with the room it will go in to make the move a breeze.
You can also consider using a colour code for every room. This will ensure the movers can move the belongings to the correct rooms without waiting for your guidance.
Simply choose a colour for each room and stick coloured tape on the boxes. Place the corresponding coloured tape on the doors too. The movers simply have to match the colours when moving the boxes.
Numbering your boxes is a great way to ensure that nothing gets missed or worse yet, stolen.
Clean Your New Place Before Moving In
There’s nothing more inviting than a clean and fresh-smelling home.
So be sure to clean your place before the day of the move. If a complete clean isn’t practical, clean up the kitchen and the bathroom at the very least. You’ll have a clean bathroom to yourself for a long relaxing shower at the end of an exhausting day.
Stock in a roll of toilet paper and some bath towels beforehand.
Activate Electricity and Other Utilities Beforehand
Getting access to power need not be as time-consuming and annoying as it used to be, thanks to power companies such as Powershop. Simply sign up and they will take care of the rest. You can be sure electricity is active on the day of the move.
Stop Stocking your Refrigerator Beforehand
The more you stock, the more baggage you will have to carry. Stop stocking the refrigerator two weeks before your move. This way, you’ll use up everything in the refrigerator by the D-Day.
Update Your Address Two Weeks Before Moving
This is important not only for utilities, cable connections, banks and schools but also for any online and offline services that you may be using such as Amazon, newspaper and magazine subscriptions, mail and credit cards.
